Plates
In most melamine
sets, plates are a key component, along with serving dishes, saucers, bowls and mugs.
Plates are a very important piece of dinnerware that are mainly used for serving food on, but
they can also be used for decorative or ceremonial purposes.
Most plates are semi-flat, or are concave in shape. They usually have a bit of a raised ridge
that helps to keep food on it, and can be made in any number of different materials or sizes.
Some types of materials that are common for plates are bone china, ceramic, porcelain,
stoneware, glass, plastic, wood, melamine, tempered glass, or even Corelle. Plates come in all different shapes and
sizes; they are usually round, but square plates are
gaining in popularity.
The size usually depends on what you are doing with it. For example, salad plates are usually a
lot smaller than dinner plates, etc. Plates can be as small as a couple inches in diameter, or as big as several
feet. Some plates are designed to be eaten off of, while others are just decorative.
According to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plate_(dishware), the history of plates is actually a pretty recent one. The Chinese discovered the processes
involved in making porcelain around 600 AD. It was not until around the early 1700s, however, that this process
became popular in Europe and the rest of the world.
Nowadays, plates are used every day in almost every home and in almost every country around the
world. You can buy them at many different retail stores, or you can order them online.
There are expensive plates, such as collectors edition plates or plates embedded with precious
metals like gold, and then there are very inexpensive plates that do not cost more than a couple dollars to
buy.
You can find them in all kinds of designs and patterns, and in all kinds of different colors.
With so many different kinds of plates to choose from, you will have no trouble at all getting the perfect set for
